Reflection 1

A problem when dealing with someone outside of your culture is the language barrier. In the podcast the project manager that is being interviewed used the example of American business people coming to discuss work with him and his people in Japan. Since nobody had talked to each other before this encounter there was a communication problem because neither group could understand each other.
A way you can deal with a problem with someone in your own culture is communicate. When the project manager took his colleague out of the meeting to discuss the problem they were having it fixed everything. If both men had ignored the issue it would have most likely gotten worse.
The project manager did everything right in every situation he had to deal with. The article sums up what happened in the interview. They talked about the different attitudes in some countries towards conflict and the language barriers when it comes to dealing with people outside your culture. If I didn't know this podcast was a different resource than this article, I would have thought they were incorporated between the same people.

Comments

  1. I agree with your final paragraph. I also believe that the interviewee did everything right in every conflict he was involved in.

  2. I wrote down a similar thought about how all issues could have been solved if the language problem was addressed in the beginning before the groups had gotten together.

  3. He did an excellent job of dealing with each conflict, though I think he could have done a better job addressing the final situation. He could have asked for another's opinion or his subordinate's suggestions.
